Task 4- Understanding the design of idents

The idea of the ident
I have chosen to look at idents around the age of teenagers. Here are some examples of this type of channel idents.

The ident mainly starting off normal and then something starts happen. In the idents tell me that the channel will be funny and full of randomness. The idents last between 10seconds to 30seconds. The idents are mainly slow which mean there is no tension in the programmes. its short and easy to remember so people who watch this will easily recognise it and stay watching it. These idents are entertainment-led because they are random so people don't think of it much and enjoy it. These idents give me the idea that the programmes will be funny and enjoyable.

Summery
All these idents have randomness in common. The conventions between these idents is that they are all animated. In my own idents i need to make them abit random but still giving the sign of what channel it is.

The E4 Idents

The E4 ident is mainly based on making a boring place into a very exciting place. The ident is animation. The information E4 is trying to show to its viewers is that this is a exciting channel and if you watch you will be full of excitement and wonder. The idents last between 20-30seconds and the onscreen tempo is slow to make the channel seem relaxing and welcoming. It makes a happy mood to the viewer as they see this as it just all random stuff happening also it makes them feel at peace. The idents are entertainment led because its all just random stuff moving around the room doing random things. When i watch these idents i feel the channel will be fun because of all the randomness that is occurring during all the idents and wonder what is going to happen to the yellow bear.

Summery
All the idents have in common is a place that looks boring and then random stuff starts to happen. In all the idents the key conventions is the little yellow bear which is always getting into danger.
it is different because it starts off all normal and then one thing happens which turns into another object moving and then the whole place is going mad. I would see this ident being played thought out the day as. I think these idents would be shown around

Task 3-Understanding the design of a suite of television idents

What is a suite of idents?

A suite of idents is where a channel designs a new ident they don't just make one they make a suite. They can make up to several different idents but they will have a similar theme or they will be linked in some way. Having a single theme helps to create/maintain the channel brand. As shown below is a suite of idents for christmas time.

Time and place

The idents can be created to be used thought out the day and that is why the channels make the suite of idents because then you can create some of the idents to go at different times of the day. Also the ident will need to match the mood of the programme because if u had a serious programme on you wouldn't want to have a happy peaceful ident which will ruin the mood that you had while watching your programme. This is the same with the time of day because you wouldn't have a ident of the moon going during the middle of the day. shown below is channel 4 suite of idents for different types of programs and maybe for the different times of the day.

Re-Branding

Also the suite can be used to re-brand the channel for example more4 changed their image to their channel will appeal for other age groups as shown below.

Before the change.

After the change

Now i will talk about a suite of idents.

1) BBC One ident - magical forest.

This ident can appeal to a family or adults as it is peaceful and relaxing. This ident i think would be mainly used during the midday as it is nature and mainly people go out during the day. This can be shown during the spring summer time of the year because the trees are green which show its around that part of the year. This ident don't really give any message about the channel.

This ident will appeal to family and kids because it involves wallace and grommet. This ident i think would be shown during the day as it is based on snow so it don't matter when it is shown. This ident would been shown around christmas time because it involves snow which is to show a christmas feeling. This ident gives a message that its christmas time.

This ident will appeal to any age group even though some people may not like does it involves nature which everyone loves. This ident i think will be shown during the day because its day time and it don't matter what time during the day. This ident can be shown any time in the year because dogs can go out and run around any time of the year and its nature which last thought all the years. This ident don't give a message about the channel only maybe about the upcoming programme.

The same with these three idents is they are all based on BBC One. they are all circle based and they all contain nature

assignment brief 1 task 2 Understanding the limitations of the television ident

Typography (e.g. having to use a particular font for image or clarity)
This is important to the ident because the channel will need a clear font so the audience will be able to see what it is clearly. They would be able to tell what the channel is because the channel would have to use the same text so people can recognise what the channel is. For example the BBC font is simple and repetitive for all of them not including cbbc and the Cbeebies. The font for the BBC font is the same all the way thought just some of them are in capitals or just lower case. They won't be able to experiment with other fonts because people will be used of seeing that font and may confuse them if it looks any different. Another channel that has its own front type is itv 1 2 3 and 4.
As you can see from the itv channels they are all the same but different colours for all the different channels but the number is always white. This shows the viewer what channel it is because they will recognise the colour of the itv.

Colour (e.g. specific colours for a specific channel, programme, department or to ensure visibility)
As shown from the pictures above the colours can be used to show the viewer what channel it is because they will recognise the colour and then the channel for example BBC mainly uses red for their ident. From the video below from 0.47 onwards the BBC mainly had red in their ident even if it was the smallest object or thing. people will see the red and then think of BBC and know that they are on the right channel.

Another example for the colours is E4 and they mainly use purple because it is bright and bold and catches the viewers eye and gets them to watch.

The channels are limited to that colour but this is good because this gives them a identity so people know what channel they are watching.
aspect-ratio (the dimensions required to fit the screen)
Mainly people have HD tv's so they need to be 16.9 so they will fit the screen. This does not have any limitations its just what the size needs to be so the ident fits the screen and u don't have parts of it missing.

Adhering to a desired tone
You need to make your ident for the right target audience for the channel. This is limited because u don't want to attract the wrong audience to the channel for example u wouldn't show fighting on Cbeebies because you would push away the audience from the sight  of violence

Duration
The duration should mainly be around 2mins because then you can cut it to fit the gap the channel needs for example you could make a 2mins ident but only need 30 seconds. This will be easier to do then trying to make the ident to the time needed because you wouldn't be able to get it right. As shown from the videos below. One is 19 seconds and the other is 25 seconds

Unit One - Task One - Understanding the purpose of television idents and the opportunities they present

The purpose of a ident
  • Identifying the channel
The ident can identify channels in many different ways like having the logo of the channel on the screen or a theme tune of the channel playing. They could even just have someone say what channel it is while something that relates to the channel that people can easily remember what the channel is.
The first ident appeared  in 1953 for the bbc as television began to expand and the viewers needed to be able to tell the difference. People nicknamed this indent the ''bat wings''. Then the famous ident of the globe appeared in 1963.
The globe was the main part of bbc as after the symbol for the bbc was a circle as shown in the video below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xOCBj_PACE
  • Organising the schedule (telling you what is on)
The indent can also be used to tell people what is coming up next on the channel for example if u was just watching eastenders it will tell you when it is back on next week or the next day then it could also say that ''The Voice'' will be coming on next. The indent has the important role when it comes to keeping a schedule.the indent is to provide to the viewers with the key information about programs on the channel they are watching.

  • Segmentation of the scheduling (providing a break for non-commercial channels)
As shown by the video above it could also be used to provide a break for channels that are non-commercial channels so the people who have to talk on these shows will have to talk for a long time so they are able to play this and provide a break for them. They could also show this when they need to change things around like get someone ready for a interview or to change people around.they could also provide more information for example what is coming up next or information about what the viewer has watched. They could also provide a variety of programming.
  • Creating corporate identity (being used off air/on merchandise)
Television are no longer restricted to one country so the ident therefore helps to create a brand in a range of different location. consistency across a range of channels such as the BBC helps to establish a corporate identify that can be sold across the world. with the growth of online platforms like the BBC-iplayer it is vital for corporations to retain the image that could be so easily diluted.
  • Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty
Building a ''brand'' for a particular channel is vitally important. An dent helps to endorse the brand of a particular channel by allowing the audience to become familiar with the logo and the style of the channel. It is a visual reminder of a particular channel and imprints the ''brand'' into the mind of the audience. This in turn encourages them to stay loyal to that particular channel.
  • Branding of particular content (e.g. Sports, News)
Ident can be used to identify programs that may be coming out in the future for example there was a ident for ''The Voice''. They can also use it to provide a consistent theme across a range of platforms.

  • Creating the right tone and appealing to the target audience
the ident must show what the channel is so people know what channel they are watching. They also need to take into consideration about the target audience if it is suitable for them for example the news would have more formal ident for the more older viewers that want to watch the news and then you would have more funny ones for the more unserious channels.
  • A marketing opportunity
An ident is a clever promotional tool. The ident can be used to promote new things that are coming out for example if it was christmas they could make a christmas one as shown below.

  • Packaging and Re-packaging a series of programmes or event (e.g. a season of programmes, sports, national event)
Often ident are used to promote large events or a new series of programmes. For example for sky movies one it shows all the movie types and it gets the viewer interested or they will remember it.
